Theoretical planetary mass spectra – a prediction for COROT
نویسنده
چکیده
The satellite COROT will search for close-in exo-planets around a few thousand stars using the transit search method. The COROT mission holds the promise of detecting numerous exo-planets. Together with radial velocity follow-up observations, the masses of the detected planets will be known. We have devised a method for predicting the expected planetary populations and compared it to the already known exo-planets. Our method works by looking at all hydrostatic envelope solutions of giant gas planets that could possibly exist in arbitrary planetary nebulae and comparing the relative abundance of different masses. We have completed the first such survey of hydrostatic equilibria in an orbital range covering periods of 1 to 50 days. Statistical analysis of the calculated envelopes suggests division into three classes of giant planets that are distinguished by orbital separation. We term them classes G (close-in), H, and J (large separation). Each class has distinct properties such as a typical mass range. Furthermore, the division between class H and J appears to mark important changes in the formation: For close-in planets (classes G and H) the concept of a critical coremass is meaningless while it is important for class J. This result needs confirmation by future dynamical analysis.

Properties of the short period CoRoT - planet population I
Context. We study the planet populations in the discovery window of the CoRoT-space-telescope scheduled for launch on December 27th. We base the prediction on 'first principles' calculations of planet formation in the framework of the planetesimal hypothesis. Aims. To provide a-priori planetary initial mass functions for confrontation with the CoRoT-planet discoveries in the entire range of sen...
متن کاملStructure and evolution of the first CoRoT exoplanets: Probing the Brown Dwarf/Planet overlapping mass regime
We present detailed structure and evolution calculations for the first transiting extrasolar planets discovered by the space-based CoRoT mission. Comparisons between theoretical and observed radii provide information on the internal composition of the CoRoT objects. We distinguish three different categories of planets emerging from these discoveries and from previous ground-based surveys: (i) p...
متن کاملAccurate fundamental parameters of CoRoT asteroseismic targets
Context. The CoRoT satellite has provided high-quality light curves of several solar-like stars. Analysis of the light curves provides oscillation frequencies that make it possible to probe the interior of the stars. However, additional constraints on the fundamental parameters of the stars are important for the theoretical modelling to be successful. Aims. We will estimate the fundamental para...
متن کاملAn investigation into the radial velocity variations of CoRoT-7*
Context. CoRoT-7b, the first transiting “superearth” exoplanet, has a radius of 1.7 R⊕ and a mass of 4.8 M⊕. The HARPS radial velocity (RV) measurements used for deriving this mass also detected an additional companion with a period of 3.7 days and a mass of 8.4 M⊕. The mass of CoRoT-7b is a crucial parameter for planet structure models, but is difficult to determine because CoRoT-7 is a modest...
متن کاملPhotometric Light Curves and Polarization of Close-in Extrasolar Giant Planets
The close-in extrasolar giant planets [CEGPs], <∼ 0.05 AU from their parent stars, may have a large component of optically reflected light. We present theoretical optical photometric light curves and polarization curves for the CEGP systems, from reflected planetary light. Different particle sizes of three condensates are considered. In the most reflective case, the variability is ≈ 100 microma...
